The Rapiscan VEDS MC Series is a neutron inspection system that automatically detects the presence of explosives and drugs in cargo. It uses proprietary Rapiscan Systems technology to detect commercial, military and most homemade explosives. As an option, chlorinated Class A drugs, such as cocaine hydrochloride and heroin hydrochloride, can also be found. It is designed to detect significant quantities of these threats, such as commonly used in a vehicle bomb or hidden in cargo.
The easy-to-use unit is configured as a truck-mounted mobile system designed for travel on public roadways. Once at an inspection site, the unit is ready in less than 30 minutes. The VEDS head, which contains the Cf-252 isotopic neutron source, is lifted from its storage container and deployed on either side of the truck. It can be positioned at different elevations to enable scanning an automobile near the ground or the top of a container on a truck. An unoccupied parked vehicle is inspected as the unit moves past it at a controlled scan speed. When the “sweep” scan is completed, the likely location of a threat material is automatically indicated to the onboard operator on the simple graphical user interface (GUI). A “spot” scan of the suspicious area can then be performed to confirm the presence of the threat.
